Fallout 3 was started a few times by other studios (including the studio responsible for the original Fallout games) but never made it to release.
The challenge for Bethesda, developer of the latest series, was to please original series fans (which includes ourselves) while taking a 2D isometric RPG and turning it into a fully-realized 3D world.
The Good:
Critics almost universally gave Fallout 3 great reviews. The game was praised for the amazing aesthetics of wasteland Washington DC, great character design and some really innovative game mechanics. It also features well over 40 hours of play time between the main quest and a large variety of side quests. The wasteland is populated with a wide variety of colorful characters and monsters and the VATS system makes it very fun to kill them! True to the original Fallout games, it also features a variety of ways to complete quests, depending on your character skillset.
The Bad:
The game has been criticized for the main plot, both its brevity and how it unfolds. There were also a number of release glitches that caused crashes and weird bugs that could cause problems with quest completion or even skip portions of the main quest. There are also some odd visual glitches with characters standing on air, floating objects and occasional combat flukes.
While the game is based on Fallout, traditional fans have noted that it departs from true Fallout style in a few of the plot lines and also drops some of the playfulness of the original series.
Third-person view seems to be an ineffective way to play the game. Players have cited it as a neat view for screenshots but not very practical for actual gameplay.
Our Summary:
It seems almost universal opinion that the flaws in the game do not hold the player back from a spectacular experience. It also helps that Bethesda has worked hard to patch issues and is even working on new content for release in February or March of 2009.
Series fans and new players alike have enjoyed this game thoroughly and SyndicateX highly recommends it for anyone interested in role-playing or shooter games.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackOMG what a load of bullshit you are spewing around! To many gamers, F3 was unplayable out-from-the-box, with constant CTD’s. It’s very, very limited piece of shit when compared to the earlier Fallouts, and even compared to today’s incredibly limited RPG-standards, it’s a wasted effort. True, Mass Effect was a piss-poor show of shit but F3 is even contending that. While it’s arguably the best RPG Bethesda has produced since Daggerfall, it’s incredibly stupid with insanely stupid writing and plot development. 10 years ago, games were produced with better quests and plots. But hey, Pete Hines himself admitted that “writing is not our things, that’s not a battle we want to fight”. And that shows. The game is made for modern, 15 year old XBOX-kiddies who need hand-holding to accomplish anything (quest-compass, throrough journal, constant tips etc) instead of actually trying to improve the drying well of RPG-games.
So sorry for not being happy that the only AAA-titles for RPG-games for year 2008 were Michael Bay version of Space Opera (Mass Effect you dolts) and retarded version of Wasteland, (F3, you dolts).
Yeah, sucks to be 30+ RPG gamer for PC.
GarfunkeL, thanks for your comments. We agree that one of Fallout’s weaker point was the plot development of the main quest. However, we felt like the atmosphere, overall game design and most of the aspects of the game were really well done. In addition, there are tons of side quests and a huge world to explore.
Was it the same Fallout as the original series? Negative. However, we felt like it was a strong game that did pretty well for translating a 256 color isometric 2D game into a fully realized 3D universe.
Ironically, we had zero technical problems with the game until Bethesda updated it and we’ve had nonstop crashes since (go figure that one out). The review was written on a vanilla install.
Hopefully the forthcoming Dragon Age or perhaps Diablo III will be an RPG you can appreciate! If we can get review copies we’ll let you know our opinions.
Graphics are good but not that good, low resolution textures. Typical Bethesda they don’t give a damn about the PC. This game was made for Xbox.
